The region of Tigray has a landscape with big mountains with flat top and walls almost vertical, called “Ambe”. With its churches, among the oldest in Ethiopia, it is a real discovery: in this region, in fact, between 8th and 15th century, were carved in the stone hundreds of rock-hewn churches, most of them on the walls of Ambe. All are located in extraordinary settings; some are easy to reach, while others represent quite a challenge in order to get to them, requiring long but magnificent walks. Several of the churches contain precious adornments, while some have paintings in excellent condition.
The churches are located in four areas: Tembien, Gheralta, Tsaeda Imba, and along the Danakil road.
